Boris Johnson and Marina Wheeler Formally Announce their Divorce

It has recently been announced that Boris Johnson and Marina Wheeler are divorcing. Ms Wheeler is a  Senior Lawyer and prominent QC and the parties have been married for 25 years. The announcement was made in a joint statement which appeared shortly after a published newspaper article which suggested that Mr Johnson had recently been unfaithful to his wife.

They have of course chosen to Divorce at a time when, Divorce Procedure is being made much simpler and straight forward. It has also been suggested that the claims of infidelity are unlikely to damage the Former Foreign Secretaries Political fortunes and/or his ambitions in respect of a Leadership bid.

News of the Marriage breakdown comes at a crucial moment for Johnson’s Political ambitions. Having resigned as Foreign Secretary in July over his opposition to Theresa May’s Chequers Brexit Plan, he has of course subsequently positioned himself as a figurehead for dissent, amid wide spread speculation that he aims to topple the prime minister. A leadership bid, let alone a prospect of him being installed in Downing Street, would of course place renewed focus on his personal and family background. Many though believe that, Mr Johnson appears immune to set backs that would derail most other careers.

The marriage to Wheeler was Johnson’s second. He had a short lived marriage to Allegra Mostyn-Owen, who he met at University. The second Marriage was the subject of regular newspaper reports about alleged infidelity, robustly denied by Johnson. A longstanding affair with a fellow journalist and colleague was described in colourful terms that the report was “an inverted pyramid of piffle. It is all completely untrue and ludicrous conjecture. I am amazed people can write this drivel”.

In addition to courting controversy in his personal and indeed family life, Mr Johnson, has benefited from what many believe is a “Teflon” type reputation which has extended to political errors, particularly during his time as Home Secretary. Johnson emerged seemingly unscathed from blunders such as wrongly saying Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, the British-Iranian women jailed in Tehran, had been teaching journalism before her arrest (which was completely untrue but made her predicament far worse), and joking that the Libyan City of Sirte could become a tourist destination once “the dead bodies” were removed. It seems however unlikely, particularly given the new proposed freedoms with no Fault Divorce that, any further media revelations about Mr Johnson’s family life are likely to alter his political fortunes.

It has also been revealed that in his own inimitable fashion, Mr Johnson is now undertaking formal after dinner speaking duties at £30,000 a time in order to fund his own personal divorce costs.
